Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

– Mark 4:39

It must have been absolutely awesome to see Him rebuke the wind and it obey His command. When the disciples saw it they exclaimed to one another, “Even the wind and the sea obey Him!” That reality struck fear into their hearts and minds. But may it strength our trust in Him, for is there anything that He cannot handle?

Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,

— Mark 3:14

The discipleship process Jesus employed is one we would do well to emulate. He appointed 12 “that they might be with Him.”

If you want to grow as a follower of Jesus, there is simply nothing better you can do than to spend time with Jesus in prayer and in His word.

As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.

– Mark 2:14

Have you heard and heeded the call of Jesus to follow Him? If not, what are you waiting for. Put your trust In Him and follow Him by faith. You’ll be glad you did.

They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

– Mark 1:18

Eight times in Mark 1 we read the word “immediately.” It is used 36 times in the 16 chapters of Mark’s Gospel. Mark’s account moves with a rapid pace. Jesus is on a mission, and He is wasting no time in accomplishing it. And Mark 1:18 indicates that Jesus’ followers wasted no time in following Him into that mission too.

“He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

– Matthew 28:6

I’ve had the privilege now on 3 separate occasions to administer communion just steps away from the empty tomb at the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem. The Garden Tomb or Gordon’s Calvary is a traditional Protestant, evangelical site, believed to be the (very temporary) resting place of Jesus before His resurrection. I’ve stood in the tomb several times, it is quite empty, and upon the inside of the door hangs a wooden plaque with the words from Matthew 28:6 inscribed … “He is not here; for He is risen.”

Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.

– Matthew 27:13-14

I imagine that Pontus Pilate had presided over more than a few such proceedings. He’d seen his share of condemned men and he had no doubt heard every possible explanation and excuse from them. But this Jesus, whom Pilate knew to be innocent, said nothing in defense. That he “marveled greatly” is certainly a literary understatement.

“For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

– Matthew 26:28

Jesus came to fulfill the Old Covenant and establish the New. He did not come to abolish all that came before, but in fulfilling it He did make it unnecessary by obsolescence.

Jesus is the better way. Through His death He destroys the power of sin and death. The New is so much better than the Old.

The outreach of the Gospel includes the clear presentation of the Gospel message, but also the tangible demonstration of Gospel too. Jesus’s story makes clear, we will give an account for how we have done both.

And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.

– Matthew 24:4

Where eschatological prophesy is concerned there are a lot of competing ideas, opinions and views. The Bible has much to say about end times (Matthew 24 and 25 being two very important chapters on the topic), but we need to be very careful with how we approach and interpret these things. Just as Jesus said, “Take heed that no one deceives you.”

“…woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!”

– Matthew 23:13, 14, 15, 23, 25, 27, 29

Are there any more cutting words for the religious establishment? Jesus was hard on hypocrites, and unfortunately hypocrisy is often most easily identifiable among religious people.

May God help us to be honest and humble.
