“I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

– Luke 11:8

I will readily admit that my persistence in prayer has often been wanting. My natural inclination is towards impatience. But in Jesus’ teaching on prayer He encourages our endurance.

Persevere and maintain your heading in prayer. Even if there appears to be no movement with God. I’m convinced that God sometimes waits to be gracious, so as to see my commitment to wait upon Him in prayer.

“Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

– Luke 10:20

The focus of the 21st century, Western Christian is often overly influenced by purely existential expectations. We can become fixated upon the here and now, and forget the great joy and rejoicing of our eternal hope in Christ.

Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

– Luke 9:23

It’s always the ‘daily’ that stands out to me when I read this passage. Probably because I’ve seen in my own life the need of daily death to self in the continuing endeavor to follow Him.

And He said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that

‘Seeing they may not see, And hearing they may not understand.’

– Luke 8:10

How well do you know the “mysteries of the kingdom of God?” They are revealed by God through the Scriptures and they’ve been given to us that we might know them.

Be a seeker of wisdom, knowledge and understanding. And know that God will not withhold wisdom from those who ask, seek and knock.

So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant.

– Luke 7:3

There was something about Jesus (perhaps many things) that caused people to want to seek Him out. Even people who were far from God. I hope that there can be things about me that cause people to seek me out for help and prayer, too.

Are we known as helpers? Are we seen as approachable? Or are we walled off and separated from the very people who need us most?

“bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.

– Luke 6:28

This is where the Christian faith gets real. What does it actually look like to be a Jesus follower? “Bless those who curse you.” Without a doubt, I need the indwelling power and grace of the Spirit to fulfill this command.

So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

— Luke 5:11

The response of instant and total devotion is amazing, and also very challenging. Jesus desire that we deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Him. But often it takes quite a lot to get us to the point of full devotion to His lordship. And yet Peter, James and John heard and completely heeded His call immediately.

Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

– Luke 4:13

I think demonic forces look for opportune times to tempt and attack us as well. And I can only imagine that there are fare more opportune times for them to do so in our lives than there was in the life of Christ. We must be on guard and aware of (not ignorant of) the arsenal and tactics of our enemy.

“Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

– Luke 3:8

We cannot rely upon the faith of our fathers. We are not sanctified by our family tree. John the Baptist said, “bear fruits worthy of repentance.” The evidence of personal repentance is essential.

For my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.”

– Luke 2:30-32

God’s heart has always been for all people. His desire is salvation of every people, in all places. God is not willing that any should perish. He desires all of humanity to come to the knowledge of the truth. Would to God that He would stir our hearts with the same passion and desire.
