And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.
– 1 Corinthians 3:1
The natural man has not the Spirit of God and does not understand spiritual things. He (or she) lives instinctively after the things their flesh (sin nature) desires. The spiritual man has the Spirit and the mind of Christ… he therefore walks in the spirit and glorifies the Lord. But although the Corinthians had the indwelling Holy Spirit, they were not living and walking in the Spirit. They were living as babes in Christ. They were cognizant of spiritual things, even desiring the things of God. But they were dominated by the things of the flesh.
Paul’s exhortation to the Galatians is appropriate for the Corinthians, and for us, too. “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).
