Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

– James 5:11

There is a blessing for those who hang in in hope, and endure. Tribulations produce perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. And the hope produced will not disappoint, because it is not a wishful thinking hope, but an absolutely certain hope.

Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

– James 4:17

It doesn’t get much clearer than that. If your conscience convicts you, or the Word of Scripture confronts you, and still you persist, you’re on very dangerous ground.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

– James 3:17

How do you know when someone is walking in Godly wisdom? The evidence is clear. Wisdom from God (i.e. from above) is pure, peaceable, gentile, not pushy, merciful, impartial and sincere. Where these things are absent, wisdom is lacking.

For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

– James 2:13

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Therefore, if you desire mercy from others, make sure you give mercy to others without reservation, for God has certainly been merciful to you.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

– James 1:16-17

It is far too easy for us to lose sight of the fact that every blessing we have, and gift we’ve received, has come from God above. Thus James reminds us, “do not be deceived … these blessings come from Him!”

You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

– James 5:8

James began his letter with a word on patience and now he returns to the theme again.

It’s been said “patience is a virtue,” and I’m sure that’s true. But me, I’m often caught up in the vice restless, irritable impatience. So I’ve discovered that in my own strength, I’m not going to fulfill the opening exhortation of James 5:8.

That being the case, I’m grateful that one of the evidences of God’s Spirit working in me (i.e. the Fruit of the Spirit) is patience. So I’ve learned (and am continuing to learn daily) the essential prayer, “God, give me Your patience in this station.”

Try it! It’s a helpful prayer.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happentomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

– James 4:13-15

Many Christians expend a lot of anxious energy fretting over potential futures. “Am I going to be married?” “Who am I going to marry?” “What’s my career going to be?” “Am I going to get this promotion?” “Will my son make the team?” “Will my daughter get into this college?” The lists of concerns go on and on, and we jump from worry to concern to question to issue moment by moment every day.

What peace there is in simply saying, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” Remember, this life is today, and it’s a vapor. It is here and then it vanishes away. Don’t miss the moment fretting about tomorrow! And remember the words of Jesus, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

– James 2:13

Jesus taugt, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” The brother of our Lord echoes this sentiment here.

I have long held the conviction that above all the innumerable attributes of our great and glorious God, His mercy is exalted to a high and prominent place. In the proclamation of His nature in Exodus 34:6-7, mercy appears first. And if it didn’t I’m not sure humanity would have survived this long.

Praise God for His rich and abundant mercy.

To me, November is always about Thanksgiving. And though it’s a hallmark of our holiday season, we can too easily fail to rightly direct our thanksgiving to the One who deserves it. Everything I have has been given to me by God.

Don’t forget to be thankful to the Lord this month.
