Matthew 21 is an amazing chapter. It moves from triumphant entry with the multitudes proclaiming Jesus as Messiah, to the religious establishment plotting His destruction. It’s phenomenal how quickly the tide changes; from “Hosanna” to “Crucify Him” in a matter of days.

“Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave.”

– Matthew 20:26-27

Again the topic is greatness and the path is service. Jesus calls His followers to servant leadership. Not only does He call us unto it, but He also was the great example of it as He came to serve and not be served.

Today’s Goal

How can you be a servant today? Find a way and be Christlike in your service.

Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?

– Matthew 19:16

Just as in Chapter 18, Matthew 19 presents another interesting (and seemingly presumptuous) request, and instead of a rebuke, Jesus gives the answer. He does so because He wants people to “have eternal life.” He came to give life and that more abundantly.

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

– Matthew 18:1

The simple answer to the disciples question would be “Jesus.” Be that as it may, I find it interesting that Jesus doesn’t chastise the disciples for there (seemingly presumptuous) question. Instead He teaches them an important Kingdom lesson on greatness.

Apparently Jesus wants us to aspire to greatness in His Kingdom, but greatness in His Kingdom is granted on far different terms than in ours.

Today’s Goal

Aspire to Kingdom greatness on Kingdom terms.

And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. “So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.”

– Matthew 17:14-16

It happens often that after great spiritual high’s and “mountain-top experiences” we then find ourselves immediately in a demon possessed valley. Peter, James and John had seen the Lord in all His glory on the mountain top, only to come down the mountain into a pressing trial.

It is important to keep in mind that mountain-top experiences and spiritual high’s are preparation for the low spiritual battles that are to come.

Today’s Goal

Be on guard. We are in a spiritual battle, so walk circumspectly.

Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

– Matthew 16:16

This is the bedrock of the church. Jesus is the Anointed Son of the Living God. You can believe Him to be a good teacher, a miracle worker, a social reformer and even a prophet. But until you recognize Him as the Anointed Son of the Living God, you’re not a saint in His Church.

Today’s Goal

Stand strong upon the firm foundation of our faith; Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.

“For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

– Matthew 15:19

Wouldn’t it be great to get rid of the wickedness of murder, adultery, immorality, stealing, lies and gossip? Some people think that if we just had better education or more fair societies, then such things would disappear. But the problem is these things are not the product of circumstance or upbringing. Evil thoughts and evil actions proceed from an evil heart. To deal with these wicked injustices we need completely transformed hearts.

Today’s Goal

Remember, the gospel makes evil men righteous and transforms societies by transforming hearts. Don’t be ashamed of the gospel, for it is the very power of God!

Have you every felt as through the mission to which Jesus has called you is just to great? Does the task seem impossible? Do you feel like you are lacking (time, resources, ability, ingenuity, etc.)? That’s great! That’s exactly the kind of circumstance in which Jesus loves to show up, because it is there He gets the greatest glory.

Today’s Goal

Don’t look to your resources, look to your God.

Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow.

– Matthew 13:3

This is the beginning of the parables of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. In fact later in the chapter we read that without a parable Jesus did not speak to the multitudes. As a fulfillment of prophecy, Jesus taught the people the mysteries of the kingdom of God in short narratives with deep spiritual meaning.

We could literally spend weeks talking about the parables of Matthew 13. These short stories are deep mines of truth and you’d do well to dig deeper into them. If thats something you’re interested in, here are a few resource recommendations to help you in your study.

And in His name Gentiles will trust.”

– Matthew 12:21

Jesus is the Jewish Messiah, but He is also the savior of the world! What do I mean? He was and is the fulfillment of all the Old Testament Jewish prophecies about the Anointed One of God, but the Anointed One of God came not only for the people of His day and locale. Jesus came for all people at any time in every place, and in His name Gentiles do trust; just as Isaiah prophesied 2,800 years ago.

Today’s Goal

Don’t allow your trust in Jesus to be something in the past. Trust Him today! What are you facing? What difficulty at work, school or home is overwhelming you? Trust Jesus in that situation and with that circumstance.
