Matthew 5
Devotional
And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying…
– Matthew 5:1-2
This is the opening of one of my favorite passages of the Bible; a section of Jesus’ teaching called “The Sermon on the Mount.” The inspiration for the message was the multitudes of needy, hurting, hungry, lost people that were following Jesus. Knowing that His time here on earth would be short, Jesus moved away from the multitudes to be with His closest followers to prepare them for the time when the work of reaching the multitudes would fall to them.
In the face of such great need there is a temptation to run right out and “get to work” in the fields of ministry. But every minister needs training and preparation, or else their time and effectiveness in the work will be little.
Today’s Goal
Do not overlook or neglect the importance of preparation for the work.
