Luke 4
Devotional
Sorry for yesterday’s lack of a devotional comment…
But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written…
And Jesus answered and said to him… for it is written…
And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said…– Luke 4:4, 8, 12
Luke 4, like Matthew 4, presents the direct temptation of Christ by the devil. It is an important passage as it presents the humanity of Jesus (“in all points tempted as we are” Hebrews 4:15), but also gives us great insight into how we can stand against temptation and defeat the enemy. Through which we find that simple response of Jesus to the tactic of the devil is the living and powerful word of Scripture.
Three times Jesus is tempted, after the routine pattern of Satan (the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life), and three times Jesus responds with the resounding “It is written!” of Scripture.
The most effective weapon against the temptations we face is the Word of God. Therefore, it is essential that we read, listen to, memorize and meditate upon the Word of God continually.
