2 Corinthians 2

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.

– 2 Corinthians 2:4

Second Corinthians is one of my favorite New Testament letters, as it is one of the more personal epistles of the Apostle Paul. Whereas First Corinthians was a stern rebuke and chastisement of Corinthian carnality, Second Corinthians is a rather emotional and heartfelt portrayal of Paul’s zeal for a church he loved deeply.

If ever you wondered what the character of a pastor was to be, begin with first and second Corinthians.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

– 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

For more than a decade and a half I have shared these words with dozens—if not hundreds—of hurting, grieving, suffering and bereaving individuals and families. What a wonderful blessing to know that our God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comforts. What a wonderful blessing to hold on to that He comforts us in all of our tribulation so that we may be able to comfort others as they suffer.

Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.

– 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

If love is the “more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31), then “Let all that you do be done with love.” Is there any better final exhortation? I think not.

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

– 1 Corinthians 15:10

Paul understood that all he had, was or could do, was according to God’s grace at work in his life. We must never lose sight of this simple, but powerful truth.

We are nothing without God’s grace!

Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

– 1 Corinthians 14:12

There are a great deal many Christians that are passionate about spiritual gifts, but I have found that often the zeal is misplaced. Some desire spiritual gifts not for the edification of the body of Christ, but for their own personal experience and boast. Let it be that your desire for greater spiritual expression would be for the building up of those around you!

Love is patient and kind

– 1 Corinthians 13:4

For about the last 3 or 4 months I’ve been stuck on these 5 words. Or rather, these two attributes of agape love. In my dealings with others I want to display a love that is patient and kind. Sadly, I know that these are not always the qualities that flow out from me.

“Lord help me to be as You are… patient and kind.”

But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.

– 1 Corinthians 12:18

Whether we think it so or not, each of us have a place within the body of Christ, wherein He has purposefully placed us. Though you feel insignificant, Christ determined that you would be where you are and has gifted you for His purposes and plans.

Seek to understand where He has placed you and why.

– 1 Corinthians 11:1

1 Corinthians 9

But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

– 1 Corinthians 9:27

Every human being has a body, a soul and a spirit. Because of sin our souls are captive to the whims, appetites and desires of our bodies (i.e. our flesh). When we are born-again by the Spirit of God, our spirits are now alive to live for and after the things that are pleasing to God. But our flesh still wars against our spirits, and our spirits against the flesh so that we do not do the things that we (spiritually) desire to do.

To experience spiritual victory and live for those things that are pleasing to God and ultimately satisfying to us, we must discipline our bodies to bring them under the control of our spirits. This death to self is hard. Impossible in fact, if it were not for the Spirit of God living within.
