Ephesians 6

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

– Ephesians 6:12

This is one of the first verses I ever memorized, and it is a good verse to meditate upon with regularity. We need to be reminded continuously that we are in a very real spiritual battle. Therefore we need to be equipped and prepared for that battle with spiritual and not carnal weaponry.

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

– Ephesians 5:15-16

The New Living Translation renders this “Make the most of every opportunity.” As ambassadors of Christ that is exactly what we need to do on a daily basis. Be wise and aware of the opportunities that God brings your way today. And make the most of every opportunity that becomes available.

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

– Ephesians 4:11-12

Like many pastors I have looked to this passage for years as a confirmation of the call that God placed upon my life nearly 18 years ago. My goal is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry for the building up of the body of Christ. That’s what I’ve done since my earliest days in ministry and that’s what I hope to do for many years to come.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

– Ephesians 3:20

Never forget this simple, but powerful truth. God is able to do infinitely and immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. His power is at work in you and me today to do just that! Daily I am confronted with my on inability, but it is there that I need to remember that God is more than able.

For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

– Ephesians 2:14-16

Through the fall described in Genesis 3, all of humanity has been separated from God and one another. But Jesus came to bring us back into connection once again. In and through Him we can experience life in connection with God and one another.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

– Ephesians 1:7

It’s difficult to choose just one verses in this rich chapter. But it is good to be reminded that it is wholly upon the riches of God’s grace, in Christ Jesus’ sacrifice that we are redeemed and forgiven. It is hear in the grace and redemption of Jesus that we find rest.

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

– Galatians 6:9

In virtually every endeavor we come to a crossroads at which we tempted to throw in the towel and give up. But Paul’s reminder is simple, “In due season you shall reap, if you don’t lose heart and give up.” So press on towards the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

– Galatians 5:16

Galatians chapter 5 is a goldmine of wealth. It is one of the chapters you could literally spend several days studying. But verse 16 is a critical gem. As the chapter goes on Paul contrasts the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. But it is the walk in the Spirit that ultimately subdues the works of the flesh and produces the fruit of the Spirt.

I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.

– Galatians 4:11

These words have always been deeply striking to me. These are the words of a shepherd; a true pastor. Paul nearly lost his life to bring the gospel to the Galatians, and now he was fearful that his work was all for not. The work of a pastor is often times gut-wrenching.

Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

– Galatians 3:3

We are saved by grace through faith. Our new life in Christ came about by the Spirit of God and nothing of our own efforts of righteousness. Now being saved by the Spirit of grace you will not be perfected by a work of your flesh. What great rest we have in the saving grace of Christ.
