But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

– 2 Corinthians 11:3

In our fallen condition we have an inclination toward religiosity. We default to what is often referred to as “works righteousness.” That is, we begin to think that our right standing before God is based upon and maintained by our good works. That’s just not the case. But because we are already predisposed to such, we are easy prey for the subtle craftiness of the devil. Therefore, be on guard against the seduction of this deception.
