For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

– 2 Corinthians 5:21

Chapter five of 2 Corinthians is a treasure-trove of weighty verses; such is verse 21. Jesus became sin for me. He who knew no sin, though He was tempted in all points like as we are, took your sin and mine upon Himself. He bore the weight and punishment for our sin that we might receive His righteousness.

On the cross, God treated Jesus as if He had lived our sinful lives, so that when we stand before Him He can treat us as if we lived His life.
