But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.

– 1 Timothy 6:11

The Scriptures routinely direct us to “put offs” and “put ons” that we are to observe. With nearly ever “put off” there is a corresponding “put on.” Here it is no different. We should flee (i.e. put off) the love of money, lusts and greed… and we should pursue (i.e. put on) righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and gentleness.

Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.

– 1 Timothy 5:17

He who desires the position of elder desires a good work. And the elder who rules well is worthy of great honor, especially those who labor, teaching the Scriptures. It feel almost self-serving to highlight these verses, but these are important Scriptural principles that we do well to consider and heed.

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

– 1 Timothy 4:8

Godliness is profitable for all things! Bodily exercise profits only in this life, but the exercise of godliness is for both here and now. Learn to be diligent in your exercise of godliness. You will not be disappointed in the results.

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.

– 1 Timothy 3:1

It is a good thing to desire a leadership position within the church. That’s certainly not to say that everyone will achieve the desired position, but he who desires the position desires a good work. Seek therefore to do the work of a servant, for servanthood is the path to leadership in God’s kingdom.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

– 1 Timothy 2:3-4

God our Savior desires all men to be saved! This is essentially important where gospel proclamation is concerned. God’s desire is that none with perish (2 Peter 3:9), that all would come to repentance, that all would come to the knowledge of the truth and experience the salvation for which Christ died.

To this end, we are exhorted to pray for all (v. 1). Pray for the salvation of all men (that is, humanity).

And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,

– 1 Timothy 1:12

Just as Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15, I know that “by the grace of God I am what I am.” I do not deserve the call to, or the position in the ministry. It is all of Him and all of His grace that I have been called, enabled and counted faithful to be attending to His work in the ministry.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you,

– 2 Thessalonians 3:1

Paul was obliged to persist in prayer for the Thessalonian Christians, therefore he requests that they also persist in prayer for he and his co-loborers.

Do not forget to continue in prayer for your pastor[s].

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,

— 2 Thessalonians 2:13

A second time Paul expresses his sense of obligation to persist in prayer for the brothers at Thessalonica. For the mere fact that God chose the Christians at Thessalonica for salvation, Paul was bound to persist in prayer for them.

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other,

– 2 Thessalonians 1:3

Paul was a true prayer warrior. He felt a certain sense of obligation—but not begrudgingly—to persist in prayer for those who came to faith through his ministry. To the Philippians he wrote, “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy.” May it be that God stirs us to persist in prayer also.
