For He testifies: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
– Hebrews 7:17
Hebrews 7 delves into one of the truly challenging texts of the Bible, one that has sparked all kinds of debate and countless commentary, and even entire books on the subject. But when reading through Hebrews 7 and studying texts surrounding Melchizedek, I think it is important to recognize that the person of Melchizedek is less important than the priesthood of Melchizedek. For Jesus is the ultimate focal point of the priesthood of Melchizedek.
Who was Melchizedek in Genesis 14? I certainly have my opinions and views. But more important than that is that Jesus is our high priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek of old.
