Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.

– Mark 14:10-11

References like these always make me seriously scratch my head. One of Jesus’s inside guys betrays Him to the chief priests, and they glad and ready to be financially complicit in the act. It’s absolutely mind blowing how we can justify unrighteousness.

“But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet.

– Mark 13:7

As Jesus begins his biggest discourse on the end times and His return He opens by explaining the things that are not a (or the) sign of His coming. Wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, famines, troubles and persecutions are the realities of life in a fallen world, but “The end is not yet.”

It is our typical response to crisis to immediately assume that it’s an indication of apocalypse, but so far every cataclysmic happening hasn’t brought on the end of all things. So remember, “The end is not yet.” Jesus will return, but He hasn’t yet, so stay engaged in the work for His kingdom.

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at Him.

– Mark 12:17

No matter how many times I read this story, I am always struck by it. His inquisitors were certain they’d found an angle by which they would trip Him. But with tact beyond anything they imagined possible Jesus turned the trick back upon them. And they simply walked away in awe.

And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His teaching.

– Mark 11:18

It’s astonishing to me that the copiests of the law and the chief priests of Israel were seeking how they might destroy Jesus. They feared that they might lose the grip upon power the held among the people, so they sought for an opportune time to destroy him.

It is truly amazing the lengths to which we can go to maintain our control and position.

Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

– Mark 10:21-22

A dozen or so times in the Gospels Jesus bid individuals to follow him. If my memory serves me correctly only a couple of times people responded as this man in Mark 10.

Jesus calls us to follow Him everyday in various ways. How are you responding?

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

– Mark 9:23-24

The word for “child” here is a Greek word that speaks of a “young child.” As I was putting my youngest down for bed tonight (he’s 3 and a half) I thought about the tears through which this man cried out to Jesus, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” I can only imagine the fear and pain he felt as he looked upon his son whom he loved.

Jesus hears our cries and records our tears, and He answers the simple prayer, “Help my unbelief!”

Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”

– Mark 8:11-12

I wonder if I ever cause Jesus to sigh deeply in His spirit. I have a feeling I do.

And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.”

– Mark 7:20-22

Man is not a product of society and his environment. Society is a reflection of the fallen nature of the human heart. If society is ever to be reformed, it must begin with an internal transformation by the power of Christ at work in us.

– Mark 6:32

When, if ever, have you stepped aside to a deserted place to spend solitary time with Jesus? If never is your answer, or “It’s been a very long time,” then I encourage you to plan a time in the next 30 days to do so. I’m certain it will be time well spent.

What has Jesus done for you? In what ways has He transformed your life with His power and presence? If you have an answer to those questions, begin proclaiming all that Jesus has done for you to those in your sphere. I guarantee that some will marvel when you do.
