“By your patience possess your souls.

– Luke 21:19

All too often I am confronted with my dreadful impatience. In my own strength petulant and irritable. But God be thanked, among the fruit of the Spirt are patience, kindness and goodness.

“Father, help me to stand firm in patient endurance, whatever the circumstances.”

“Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

– Luke 20:24-25

The money they presented bore the image of Caesar. Therefore Jesus proclaimed, “Render unto Caesar that which bears his image.”

I wonder if the devout interrogators were reminded in that moment what in this world bears God’s image.

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

– Genesis 1:27

Render to God that which is His!

“for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

– Luke 19:10

Jesus looks for lost things… That’s how He found us. And He wants to instill in us the same passion for that which is lost.

We have a tendency to overlook that which is lost. May God open our eyes and hearts to see and desire to seek the salvation of that which is lost.

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,

– Luke 18:1

Does your heart drop when you read words like these from Jesus? Mine does. The Proverbs say “hope deferred makes the heart sick” (Proverbs 13:12). And yet Jesus says, “men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”

But when our prayers go unanswered, it is difficult to continue in prayer without losing hope. But the point of Jesus’ exhortation is found in the parable that followed concerning the pleas of the persistent widow. Persist! Continue in prayer. Pray earnestly like Elijah.

“Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

– Luke 17:3-4

Radical forgiveness. That is what God, in Christ, has given us, and that is what we ought to give to others. Freely we have received, freely we ought to give.

Do you struggle with forgiveness? You’re not alone; many people do. Here are three things to consider to help you move toward forgiveness.

  1. Retribution and vengeance are God’s. You’re never granted authority to enact revenge.
  2. Unforgiveness injures only the one holding it.
  3. Forgiveness does not necessarily restore relationship. There is no restoration without repentance.

“So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. “And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home.

— Luke 16:8-9

Among the parables told by Jesus, this may be one of the more fascinating.

How are you stewarding the gifts, talents, abilities, time and resources you’ve been given by God? It might be a good time to take account of your stewardship.

“I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.
“Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

— Luke 15:7 & 10

Repentance produces Joy in Heaven… It makes God happy. If for no other reason than that, we should preach the Gospel of repentance.

“But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

– Luke 14:13-14

I’m often struck by the way in which Jesus promotes our righteous behavior with the lure of eternal reward. Some Biblical ethicists will say, “We must do what is right simply because it is right, whether there is reward or not.” This, I think, is true. And yet Jesus often here (and elsewhere) speaks directly to our desire for reward. If anything, it’s fascinating.

“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

– Luke 13:24

Chapter 13 began with a call to personal, individual repentance and nearing the end it closes with this statement, “many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” Entrance to the Kingdom is exclusive. Our culture abominates that truth, but their disdain for it makes it no less potent.

And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

– Luke 12:15

Is there anything more stridently different to that which we are sold in the 21st century western world? Our culture seems to oppose this truth in every way possible. But how wonderfully different life becomes when take hold of this truth in our hearts and apply it in our lives.
