“But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

– Luke 14:13-14

I’m often struck by the way in which Jesus promotes our righteous behavior with the lure of eternal reward. Some Biblical ethicists will say, “We must do what is right simply because it is right, whether there is reward or not.” This, I think, is true. And yet Jesus often here (and elsewhere) speaks directly to our desire for reward. If anything, it’s fascinating.
