Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,
– Luke 18:1
Does your heart drop when you read words like these from Jesus? Mine does. The Proverbs say “hope deferred makes the heart sick” (Proverbs 13:12). And yet Jesus says, “men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”
But when our prayers go unanswered, it is difficult to continue in prayer without losing hope. But the point of Jesus’ exhortation is found in the parable that followed concerning the pleas of the persistent widow. Persist! Continue in prayer. Pray earnestly like Elijah.
