Acts 9

Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”

And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”

– Acts 9:4-5

And the words of his Rabbi Gamaliel had to have rung in his ears… “but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”

I imagine that Saul choked on his words in a big way as we read in Acts 9, “So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?””

As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.

– Acts 8:3

I wonder what Saul thought of his Rabbi Gamaliel’s counsel to the Sanhedrin in Acts 5. Did he think that Gamaliel had lost his zeal and steadfastness for the faith (of Judaism)? Whatever his thoughts, Saul wanted to destroy the “way” of Jesus of Nazareth, and any followers of that way.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

– Acts 7:57-58

A disciple of the great Rabbi Gamaliel. The same Gamaliel that had given counsel in Acts 5 to the religious leaders in Jerusalem saying, “And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”

Gamaliel’s student must not have received that memo. Or more likely, out of zeal, he purposely disregarded it. We’ll see how that worked out… in two days.

The simple qualifications of these early ordained ministers was (1) a good reputation, (2) the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and (3) wisdom. I don’t think it gets much more simple.

“Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”

– Acts 5:20

The Disciples were increasingly being mistreated for their politically incorrect proclamation of the good news of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. But they would not back down, though they were commanded by the establishment to do so. Instead God, by an angel, said, “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”

You can be sure, as our culture grows further and further away from God, the message of this life will become increasingly offensive and politically incorrect. But we too must speak to the people all the words of this life, not matter the cost.

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

– Acts 4:12

In Acts 4 Peter and James are under interrogation for the miraculous healing of the lame man in Acts 3. The inquiry of the interrogators was simple, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” The answer was simple too, “let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.” And there is salvation in not other name, “for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

This is the call of the Gospel. “Turn to God and be converted by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Experience the glorious forgiveness of Christ and the refreshing work of His living water.” This is truly good news, and good news needs to be boldly proclaimed.
