Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

– Romans 13:1

This command is one that many people wrestle with, especially when “their” political party is not in power. Over the last 18 years of pastoring, I’ve had a number of conversations with (typically) brothers in the church who are looking for a loophole to get out of this one.

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.

– Romans 12:9-13

I’m not sure any commentary is necessary where these exhortations are concerned. Maybe just meditate upon them today, and seek for opportunities to put them to practice.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

– Romans 11:33

The longer I live walking with God and studying His word, the more amazed I am at the riches of His wisdom and knowledge. I find myself exclaiming the very words of Paul, “How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!”

For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

– Romans 10:13

Once again we are reminded in Romans of God’s great grace. And because of His great grace, He is not partial, saving all who call upon Him.

As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”

– Romans 9:13

Romans chapters 9 – 11 is a challenging portion of Scripture, and this quote from the Prophet Malachi is one of the verses that makes it so challenging. Many people have a very hard time with the concept of God declaring His hatred here for Esau. I have as hard of a time with the concept of God declaring His love for Jacob.

When you read the story of Jacob in the Book of Genesis (especially the account of his early life), you realize that Jacob had a lot of rough edges and issues. That God loved him is a testament to God’s grace. I’m grateful that God is so gracious!

For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

– Romans 8:3-4

The weakness of the law is you and me. We are weak to overcome the strength of our sinful flesh, even though the Law is holy, just and good. But God, in Christ Jesus, has fulfilled the righteous requirement of the law for us!

O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

I am grateful that Romans 7 doesn’t end at verse 24! I think God that deliverance is through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.

– Romans 4:23-25

The stain of sin is great and the sting of the death that sin has wrought severe. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. He was delivered up to the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead to bring about our justification.
