All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

– 1 Corinthians 6:12

On November 9, 2016 almost 8 million voters in the state of California voted to legalize recreational marijuana for persons aged 21 years or older. This step (albeit inevitable as it was in progressive California) has push a new discussion among Christians in my sphere (I’m a native Californian).

“Pastor, is it ok for me to smoke marijuana now that it’s legal?” Great question! And first things first, I think it’s always important to note that there are a whole lot of legal things that are immoral (i.e. adultery, prostitution (in many places), abortion, etc.). So just because something is legal, doesn’t make it right.

Every time this question comes to me, one of my first Scriptural references is 1 Corinthians 6:12. As our society continues to descend toward the chaos of Romans 1, we need to remember these words.
