Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.
– 1 Corinthians 7:2
One of the things I get to do as a pastor is officiate weddings. But before I’ll officiate a wedding I require couples that I marry to sit with me through a series of pre-marriage classes. In my first meeting I always share with the couple seven purpose for marriage that we find in the Bible; one of them is purity as seen here in 1 Corinthians 7:2.
God created us with an innate sexual drive and desire. This is (in my personal and professional opinion) a good thing! But God, the creator of man (and woman), sex and the sex drive, commanded that such sexual fulfillment is only allowable in the confines of marriage. Therefore, for us to maintain purity and possess our bodies in honor, “let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.”
