Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.

– 1 Timothy 5:17

Both Timothy and Titus were set to the task of overseeing churches, and those leading them. It was their assignment to set in place overseeing elders and leaders for the scattered gatherings of Christians over which they pastored. Therefore both Timothy and Titus are given instructions about the qualifications and duties of such leaders. And they were also to instill within the minds of those being led by such elders to honor the position and authority granted by God to them.

If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.

– 1 Timothy 4:6

My aim in the last 19 years has been just this, to be a good minister of Jesus Christ. Any and every leader (pastor) who desires to be such should therefore be well versed in the words of the Pastoral Epistles (1 & 2 Timothy and Titus).

These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

– 1 Timothy 3:14-15

The sound doctrinal teaching of 1 Timothy was intended to instruct Timothy, and those over whom he was pastoring, how they ought to conduct themselves among God’s people, the Church. We’d do well to take careful note of these important truths.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

– 1 Timothy 2:3-4

Do you read “all” as “all,” or do you read it as “only the elect.” Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, because God our Savior desires all men to be served.

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

– 1 Timothy 1:15

This is the “glorious gospel of the blessed God” spoken of in verse 8. The chief purpose of Christ’s advent was to seek and save that which was lost. And Christ has commissioned us to continue His most glorious mission.

But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary indoing good.

2 Thessalonians 3:13

Paul’s word to the Galatians in chapter 6 is almost identical. Though there in Galatians 6 we find the additional word, “for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

Gon’d grow weary in the ‘right now’ work of the Gospel. Because there is going to be a harvest for all of your hard labors.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given useverlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

Christ is the one we must rely upon to establish us in our words and works. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for good works, which He before ordained for us. He planned them. He will establish and build us up in them. But wee need to begin to take the steps of faith tow walk in them.

Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

– 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Running through the prophetic words of 1 Thessalonians 4 and 5 are reminders to comfort and build one another up with and through the words written here. The edifying comfort is clear. Jesus is coming again! We don’t know when, and we certainly don’t know all the details of His second coming. But we know this for sure. He will come again!

Therefore comfort one another with these words.

– 1 Thessalonians 4:18

When studying the prophetic words of 1 Thessalonians 4 and 5 it is very important to remember that these words are intended to be a comfort to the reader. When these words are properly understood, that’s exactly what they are. Unfortunately many people find themselves more anxious and argumentative after having read and considered them. If so, you’re reading it wrong.
