But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.
– Philippians 3:7
He sat across from me and recounted the major things he’d given up to follow Christ. The great retail job and the opportunities for sponsorship in extreme sports topped his list. He made it sound like he’d given up a ten figure inheritance or a privileged position at the head of some multinational corporation. I’m sure in his 18 year-old mind the sacrifices seemed immense. When he was finished rehearsing his story he looked across the table awaiting my praise.
“Is that all?”
“Is that all? I’m just not sure what it is you’ve sacrificed. Moreover, I’m not sure God is really going to have much for you to do until you realize that all that you’ve ‘given up’ to follow Christ, is really nothing at all.”
Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
