Hebrews 2
Devotional
Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
– Hebrews 2:14-15
Humanity, the world over, suffers from the fear of death. At a certain point in every person’s life they are confronted with the reality of mortality.
I remember when it really became real for me. It was during the summer between 5th and 6th grade when an uncle (not one I had any close connection with) took his own life. My grandma was going to drive 14 hours north to go to the funeral, and my parents sent me along to keep her company on the trip. I’m pretty sure I’d been to funerals before that, but I remember the heaviness of the reality of death hitting me at that funeral for the very first time. And with it, the fear of death too.
Jesus frees us from the fear of death! What a beautifully joyful message the Gospel is!
