Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
– 1 Peter 1:13
During the closing song of our 3rd service this last Sunday (about 12:30 pm) my executive pastor approached me to let me know about the shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The high-flying joy of the message I’d just preached was instantly grounded by the reality of the brokenness of the world we live in.
If in this life only we have hope in Christ, there’s every reason to be continuously pessimistic. But James here encourages the Christian saying “rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Regularly bombarded by the sadness of this sin-riddled world, we still have an optimistic vision of the future, because someday Jesus is going to return and graciously make all things new!
