James 4
Devotional
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happentomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”
– James 4:13-15
Many Christians expend a lot of anxious energy fretting over potential futures. “Am I going to be married?” “Who am I going to marry?” “What’s my career going to be?” “Am I going to get this promotion?” “Will my son make the team?” “Will my daughter get into this college?” The lists of concerns go on and on, and we jump from worry to concern to question to issue moment by moment every day.
What peace there is in simply saying, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” Remember, this life is today, and it’s a vapor. It is here and then it vanishes away. Don’t miss the moment fretting about tomorrow! And remember the words of Jesus, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
