From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

– Matthew 4:17

I’m tempted to talk about repentance again. I won’t. Instead I think it might be good to meditate today on the words after “repent” in Jesus’ proclamation.

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” We need to turn from our sin, and turn to Christ, because the kingdom of heaven is available. But only to those who turn away from their sin and to Christ.

Tomorrow we’ll begin The Sermon on the Mount. Spoiler Alert! The opening words say “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Something about repentance and poverty of spirt go hand in hand. But I think I’ll save that for tomorrow.
