“But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony.

– Luke 21:13

Be it tribulation, persecution, trial or suffering; God has an amazing way of using the anxiety-producing circumstances of our lives as an occasion for a testimony of His greatness and power. What are you facing today? I’m certain God wants to use it perfect your character, and glorify His.

And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people—for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

– Luke 20:19

They knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But they would not repent of their wicked desire to destroy him.

And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.

– Luke 19:407-48

It is shocking that the religious leaders were the ones seeking to destroy Jesus. Striking because of how easily we who are religious can wrongly justify our wickedness.

But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.

– Luke 18:23

It is an unfortunate reality that riches are often the cause of great sorrow. Especially if such riches become that which your life is measured by, and/or devoted to. Beware of riches, they are elusive and ultimately unsatisfying.

“Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

— Luke 17:3-4

Forgiveness can be difficult for us. Especially if the person seeking our forgiveness has offended us in the same manner, repeatedly. But, by God’s grace, we can and should forgive.

Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him.

– Luke 16:14

Later Paul would write, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Clearly this love of money, in the hearts of the Pharisees, was one of the motivating factors of their wicked desires against Jesus.

“Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

– Luke 15:10

The religious leaders were vexed by the sinful people drawing near to Jesus. But God rejoices over the salvation and restoration of lost sinners through repentances. Certainly a contrast to consider.

“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place.

“But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.

– Luke 14:8-10

Self-aggrandizement and self-promotion are not good traits. That which is valued in 21st century western culture, is not valued by Christ in His Kingdom. The lower road is not the easiest to take, but it’s certainly the wisest. Read Philippians 2 … it’s certainly the way of Jesus.

On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.”

– Luke 13:31

Not exactly the picture of the Pharisees you expect in the gospels. Apparently there were some among their ranks that were seeking to protect, rather than oppose.

“Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”

– Luke 12:1

This is one of the great dangers of religiousness. Though religious ritual and spiritual discipline can be a truly rich addition to our faith, we must be careful that such outward displays not be merely skin deep. External formalities are not the same as internal realities.
