Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

– John 18:36

At times it can be challenging for the people of God to follow the example of Jesus. His is an otherworldly kingdom. Therefore His people are not waging war in the natural, for the affairs of His kingdom here. Though we do pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” it is not our place to politic or fight to promote the agenda of His kingdom.

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

– John 17:3

There is an already/not yet paradigm where eternal life is concerned. We look forward, with great expectation, to the joy of eternal life with Christ, in His kingdom. But we can begin to know and experience that eternal life now. For this is eternal life, that you may know God and Jesus Christ now.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

— John 16:33

Some have been guilty of preaching a form of Christianity that purports a life without trial or tribulation. But Jesus emphatically declared, “In the world, you will have tribulation.”

We’re not promised ease. We have no guarantee of tranquil, serene security. Though peace is available to us in Christ, as this verse makes clear. The tribulation is more certain than the peace.

Rejoice in the reality that in Christ we are more than conquerors by His overcoming power and might.

“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.

– John 15:11

Among the many desires that Christ has for your life is that His joy would remain in you and that your joy may be full. We certainly are working endlessly for the increase of our own joy. We pursue happiness with determination. But sure is a wonder to realize that Christ desires your expanding and eternal joy, too.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

– John 14:26

The Holy Spirit, our Helper, He teaches us all things and brings to remembrance the words and teachings of Christ, at just the right time. But He cannot bring to your remembrance things that you’re unaware of or straight up do not know. Thus it is imperative that you hide the Word of God in your heart.

Never overlook the simple necessity of consuming and memorizing the Scriptures. The daily, patient and difficult work of preparing cisterns for stores of living water can be agonizing at the moment, but it promises times of refreshing in the dry days that will come in the future.

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

– John 13:1

I think it’s worth a reminder that Jesus did not stumble into the events of His passion. They didn’t come upon Him or happen to Him like an unexpected diagnosis or accident might with us. Jesus knew that the hour of His departure had come. He was well aware of what was shortly about to befall Him.

In the same way, Jesus knows what is about to come into your life today, or this week. God through Jeremiah said, “I know the plans I have for you.” Even though you might stumble into the events of this week. Though a crisis or challenge might come into your life or happen to you, our God knows and has a plan for you in it.

But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

– John 12:10-11

It’s hard to imagine such hatred in the hearts of ones so pious as the chief priests. It reminds me of the old saying, “The best of men are men at best.”

And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.”

– John 11:28

The call of Jesus is a personal and individual call. He has come and He is calling for you. He desires to make Himself known to you. He wants to reveal His glory and grace to you. Will you answer His call? As for Mary, “As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him.” I pray you’ll do the same.

Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am …

– John 10:7

The Gospel of John is largely built around the great “I am” statements of Jesus. There are seven of them in this great book. Two of them are found here in John 10 (“I am the door” and “I am the Good Shepherd”). But the words “I am” appear 5 times in John 10.

  1. I am the door of the sheep (John 10:7)
  2. I am the door (John 10:9)
  3. I am the good shepherd (John 10:11)
  4. I am the good shepherd (John 10:14)
  5. I am the Son of God (John 10:36)

These are seriously audacious statements from Jesus. Some may say, “I think Jesus was a good man,” or “I believe Jesus to be a good teacher.” Those who do are confronted with the C.S. Lewis’s trilemma. Either Jesus is divine (Lord), or else He was evil (a liar), or He was outright deluded (a lunatic). But just a good man, or a good teacher? I agree with Lewis, those options aren’t available.

He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

– John 9:25

As we move through our lives there is no doubt that we will encounter cynical, unbelieving, skeptics. Often times they’ll come at us with strong statements about Jesus, or questions concerning His true identity. Sometimes the best answer is, “As to your question, I do not know. One thing I know: though I was blind, now I see.” It’s hard to argue with that.
