Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
– John 4:10
This is a double barrel shotgun blast of essential truth. Jesus reveals to the Samaritan woman at the well two important things that she was ignorant of. First, the gift of God; and second, the [true] identity of the giver of the gift. But if she knows the gift of God and the giver of the gift, then all she will need to do is ask of Him, and He will freely give.
As the story continues, Jesus artfully reveals the gift and His true identity. And as soon as her ignorance is dealt with, she requests the gift, and it is freely given.
