John 8
Devotional
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
– John 8:12
Years ago I remember visiting an old man in the hospital. He was drawing near to the time of death. His eyesight was greatly diminished and his body was slowly shutting down. But though his eyesight was almost completely gone, the nurse kept the light above his bed on. She told me, “The light brings them comfort.”
There is something terribly unnerving about darkness. Many children are severely afraid of the dark. A lot of adults too. Because of sin and the fall, we are all in perpetual darkness. That is, of course, spiritually. Internally we all long for light. Which makes Jesus’ promise all the more glorious; “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
