Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

— Romans 2:1

Jesus gave a very similar caution in Matthew 7:1-5. There He said, “With what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Many times we have proven ourselves hypocrites by our self-righteous condemnation of others, while not adequately considering ourselves. That does not mean that we are never to weigh or judge the words or actions of others. But it does mean that we need to do so under careful self-examination. And the fact is, when we do carefully examine ourselves, we find that we are guilty and desperately in need of God’s grace and forgiveness.
