You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all.

– 2 Corinthians 3:2

Skeptics often ask, “What evidence do you have for the veracity of Scripture and the reality of God? Frankly, I think it is hard to argue with the changed lives of the saints of God. Therefore Jesus would say, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven.”

For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

– 2 Corinthians 2:4

This is most certainly Paul’s most emotionally revealing letters. Whereas Romans, Ephesians and many others, allow us to see Paul’s theology and intellect shine, 2 Corinthians shows us Paul’s heart. And not only does it allow us to see the heart of the Apostle, I believe it also reveals the heart of God who inspired him to write it.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

– 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

I am grateful that God, our Father, is called the “Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.” There is comfort simply in this! He does not just comfort us. He is the God of all comfort, and as such He “comforts us in all our tribulation. But don’t miss that we then, in turn, are to be a comfort to others, with the comfort with which we ourselves have been comforted by God.

For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

– 1 Corinthians 16:9

We often (wrongly) assume that an open door from the Lord is evidenced by ease and smooth sailing. But actually, open doors are often attended by many adversaries. Remember, the enemy opposes all that God seeks to accomplish. Therefore, when open doors are before you, expect opposition.

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen…

– 1 Corinthians 15:3-5

This is the Gospel simply stated. Christ died for our sins, as foretold by the prophets. He was buried (because he was dead), and He rose again the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures. And the risen and alive (from the dead) Jesus was seen by witnesses.

Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

– 1 Corinthians 14:12

I’ve counseled and prayed with many Christians over the years who are desiring and seeking for a greater experience of spiritual gifts in their lives. Too often I have found that such a desire has less to do with the edification of the church than it does a mere personal experience. Paul’s counsel is spot on. If you are desiring Spiritual gifts, let it be motivated (primarily) by the desire for edification within the Church.

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

– 1 Corinthians 13:13

Faith, hope and love are the marks of a maturing follower of Jesus. As we grow in our walk with Christ we should increase in faith, hope and love. That being the case, these three are an important gauge for self examination as a disciple.

Is your trust in God growing? Do you trust Him for your eternal salvation? Do you trust Him for your earthly provision? Is your hope in God or your 401k? Is it a confident hope or a wishful thinking hope filled with doubt? Are you loving God and loving others? And is that love being expressed in an overflow of good works? This are hard questions to wrestle with, but it’s important that we do. Because growing disciples of Jesus are growing in faith, hope and love.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

– 1 Corinthians 12:7

The irrevocable gifts of God are not given for our personal and private hoarding. They are given by the Spirit for the profit of all within the body of Christ. The church suffers when the Christian hides or suppresses the gifts that God has given for our mutual edification and profit.

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

— 1 Corinthians 11:26

As we gather together, as the body of Christ, and as we partake of the bread and the cup, at the Lord’s table, we must never lose sight of the fact that in His death and burial, there is also the resurrection which leads us to our great hope of His return. The church for the last 2,000 years has continued to “proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” We worship and remember the risen Christ. And we look forward to His eventual return.

Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

– 1 Corinthians 10:11

It’s been said that Biblical literacy is at an all time low in our day and place (in the West). I’m not sure if that’s true, but in many ways it certainly feels that way. It is rare to find anyone who has much knowledge of the Bible, especially the Old Testament. Even with a lot of Church-goers, they haven’t spent much time considering the first two-thirds of the Bible. But in this neglect there is a great loss.

All of the great history, poetry, and prophecy of the Old Testament was written four our instruction and admonition. The things contained in Genesis to Malachi happened as types, symbols, and examples for us. That means, they truly are applicable, even for those living in the 21st-century.
