For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

– Philippians 1:21

The confidence with which Paul faced life and death is remarkable. He was certain, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that death would mean life with Christ. And to continue to live would be a life lived for His name and glory. There is no stopping an individual with such conviction.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

– Ephesians 6:10

We have no might or power in and of our selves wherein we might stand. But in and by the power of His might we can, in strength, confront any and all foes from a position of victory.

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

– Ephesians 5:15-16

We have no time to waste. We’ve wasted enough time walking in the foolish futility of our flesh. Now is the time to redeem what remains. Now is the time to walk in the wisdom given us by God’s grace.

and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

— Ephesians 4:23

This renewing happens by “the washing of the water, by the word.” It is by the transforming power of God’s Word, and the working of the Holy Spirit. And as it is accomplished we are blessed to be able to “prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God,” in and through our lives lived for His namesake.

in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

– Ephesians 3:12

According the finished work of Christ, we have boldness, and access with confidence through faith in Him. This is powerful and amazing.

The author of the book of Hebrews wrote that we can, “come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” We have access through Jesus to come before God with absolute assurance that we can appear before Him. Our sin is dealt with. It’s wholly and completely forgiven. There is no more condemnation. There is no fear. There is no shame. It is done away with.

Through the sin of Genesis 3, we have all experienced the devastation of the fall. As a result of the fall we are all disconnected from God and one another. But Jesus came to destroy sin and death, and bring reconciliation.

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

– Ephesians 1:13

How are we saved? We are saved, “By grace … through faith, and that not of ourselves.” But how is that salvation received by us? Ephesians 1:13 makes it crystal clear.

But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

– Galatians 6:14

We are saved because of the cross. We have hope in and through the cross. Therefore, may it never be that we boast in anything other than the cross, and the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.

– Galatians 5:8

I’ve had many conversations over the years, with well-meaning Christians that have some drive or compulsion to commit to some task, or give up some liberty, but it’s not clear that the impulse is from God. Typically there is a deep personal (sometimes emotional) zeal driving them, or perhaps a social pressure influencing and affecting them. But many times there is no clear call or command in Scripture to do so.

In those instances, this verse coms to mind. Then I find myself asking, “How do you know that this is God’s call? Are you sure that this His urging?” On a few occasions I’ve even clearly stated, just as Paul does here, “This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.”

But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

– Galatians 4:4-5

For many years I’ve had the privilege of teaching people the principles and process of Bible interpretation. One of the important things that I teach people to do is to take careful note of clauses and propositions that have words that appear in the subjunctive mood. Here in Galatians 4:4-5, there is an important one.

Here Paul lays out the redemptive plan of God. At just the right time, when the fullness of the time had come, God sent Jesus, miraculously born, to bring redemption so that we might receive adoption into the family of God.

This simple subjunctive word — “might” — hits right at a false teaching called universalism, or sometimes referred to as “universal salvation.” There have been those that have preached that Christ’s death on the cross saves all humanity. And while it is true that Christ’s death, for our sins, does satisfy the righteous requirement of the Law, thus making salvation available to all sinners, it is only effectual for those that believe. Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 4 make this very clear.

For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.

– 1 Timothy 4:10
