This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.
– Galatians 5:8
I’ve had many conversations over the years, with well-meaning Christians that have some drive or compulsion to commit to some task, or give up some liberty, but it’s not clear that the impulse is from God. Typically there is a deep personal (sometimes emotional) zeal driving them, or perhaps a social pressure influencing and affecting them. But many times there is no clear call or command in Scripture to do so.
In those instances, this verse coms to mind. Then I find myself asking, “How do you know that this is God’s call? Are you sure that this His urging?” On a few occasions I’ve even clearly stated, just as Paul does here, “This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.”
