Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.

– 1 Timothy 5:22

First Timothy 3 records a series of qualifications for leaders (elders) and servants (deacons) within the church. And before anyone is every ordained to the task fo leading or serving, it is important that the church observe that the potential elder or deacons is one that is truly qualified. This often takes some measure of time. Therefore Paul writes, “Do not lay hands on anyone too quickly.”

Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

– 1 Timothy 4:13

These three things are essential aspects of the ministers calling and task. It is the work of the Christian leader to be given to attentive reading, exhortation, and doctrine, for the equipping of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ.

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.

– 1 Timothy 3:16

First Timothy 3:16 is one of the early hymns or doxologies of the church, and what it reveals is quite interesting. In the six lines of this early hymn it is clear that the church, very early in it’s existence, had a well developed Christology. The early church (ca. 64 AD) held as incontrovertible that Jesus was (and is) God in the flesh.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

– 1 Timothy 2:3-4

God’s desire is for the salvation of all people, in all places. He does not discriminate according to ethnicity, class, or socioeconomic strata. He is impartial. Therefore, we should also be indiscriminate and impartial in our witness.

Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,

– 1 Timothy 1:5

God desires to bring about the increase of love in our lives by the working of His word and Spirit. Galatians 5 says that the evidence of God’s Spirit at work in us is love. And here in 1 Timothy, Paul exhorts that leaders in the church give forth no other teaching than wholesome doctrine, which is evidenced by “love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith.

Love is the product of, and the barometer by which we judge proper doctrine.

But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good.

– 2 Thessalonians 3:13

Written in close to the same time period as 2 Thessalonians, Paul wrote to the Galatians, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9) These words have been a continual encouragement to me in the last 19 years of ministry. I have returned to them often, and imagine I will continue to do so.

Though the fig tree may not blossom,
Nor fruit be on the vines;
Though the labor of the olive may fail,
And the fields yield no food;
Though the flock may be cut off from the fold,
And there be no herd in the stalls—
Yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.

– 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

Paul sure knew how to speak a benediction (i.e. blessing). And this is a truly great one. So good that I have very little to add to it, other than to encourage you to simply meditate upon it today.

Therefore we also pray always for you … that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

— 2 Thessalonians 1:11, 12

If you’re ever wondering how to pray for someone, praying Paul’s prayers is a good place to start. This is a spectacular prayer, and if you’d ever like to pray for me, please feel free to pray that Christ would be glorified in me, and that I would be glorified in Him, by His grace!

in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

– 1 Thessalonians 5:18

In another place Paul writes, “giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20). Is it really possible to give thanks always for all things? Can we truly give thanks “in everything?”

This last Sunday I was teaching at my home church through 2 Timothy, and while I was teaching something stuck out to me that wasn’t in my notes. Paul in the opening of 2 Timothy writes “I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day.” Those three words — “I think God” — jumped out at me. They jumped out at me because of the context in which they were penned.

When Paul wrote “I thank God” in 2 Timothy, he was suffering, in prison, chained, and expecting immanent execution for no real crime. And yet he could write, “I thank God.” He could do that because (1) this is the will of God in Christ Jesus, and (2) because he knew in whom he had believed, and he was persuaded that He was able to keep that which he had committed to Him until the day he entered into the promise of life that he had received from Christ Jesus.

But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;

– 1 Thessalonians 4:9

God is at work in us, by His Spirit, and His word, to teach us to love one another. We do not need another brother, or sister, or pastor to tell us to do so. We do not need a course to teach us to do so. God by His Spirit is calling us to do so. Therefore, we ought to love one another.
