Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,

– 1 Timothy 1:5

God desires to bring about the increase of love in our lives by the working of His word and Spirit. Galatians 5 says that the evidence of God’s Spirit at work in us is love. And here in 1 Timothy, Paul exhorts that leaders in the church give forth no other teaching than wholesome doctrine, which is evidenced by “love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith.

Love is the product of, and the barometer by which we judge proper doctrine.
