Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

– James 1:16-17

It is far too easy for us to lose sight of the fact that every blessing we have, and gift we’ve received, has come from God above. Thus James reminds us, “do not be deceived … these blessings come from Him!”

For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.

– Hebrews 13:14

Some of those highlighted in the ‘Hall of Faith’ in Hebrews 11 (specifically Abraham and Sarah) forsook the possession of a homeland and city here in this life, seeking a better, heavenly dwelling. As a result it is said that “God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.” Therefore, let us be like those counted worthy to be numbered among the faith-filled and faithful.

Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:

– Hebrews 12:14

Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.” It is an indication of our adoption as children of God, that we pursue peace with all people. One of the evidences of the abiding presence of God’s Spirit (i.e. the fruit of the Spirit) is peace. Therefore, we ought to seek peace and pursue it.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

– Hebrews 11:1-2

Just as the elder of old (written of in Hebrews 11), we can have a good standing and testimony before God by sincere faith.

For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

– Hebrews 10:14

Under the ritualistic system of the Old Covenant, the priests offered an innumerable number of sacrifices. But Jesus, by His perfect sacrifice has abolished the former system, and brought complete atonement to us. The Law is fully satisfied by His sacrifice, and we are fully sanctified by His offering.

And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

– Hebrews 9:22

Christ died for our sins, according the scriptures, and it was necessary for Christ to suffer, so that repentance and remission of sins might be preached among all nations. Without his death, there is no removal of sins. But by His death we are forgiven and sanctified.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.

– Hebrews 8:7

The fact that Jesus came to institute a new covenant proves the old covenant was not able to justify us before God. The blood of Christ, in the new covenant, is the new and living way consecrated for us by our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ.

for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

– Hebrews 7:19

The law made nothing perfect. This is such an vitally important truth. We can try, with all of our energy and might, to make ourselves right and righteous by the law, but by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified before God. The law is our school master to bring us to Christ so that we might be justified by faith.

The Law is holy, just and good. But it can by no means make us holy, just or good.

…that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,

– Hebrews 6:18-19

The hope of the refuge we have in Christ Jesus, is an anchor for our soul—that part of us that worries, frets, and feels anxiety. Therefore, as the Psalmist wrote 3,000 years ago, when your heart is overwhelmed, be led by the Lord to the Rock that is higher than us. A shelter, and a strong tower form the enemy.

Hebrews 5

Devotional

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

– Hebrews 5:12-14

Hebrews five ends with a pastoral smack-down. Because of their upbringing in the Jewish faith, these Hebrew Christians—to whom this letter is written—had such a great foundation upon which to build a rich and vibrant faith. But somewhere along the way their growth had stunted. Perhaps the trust-fund wealth of their heritage hindered their passionate in their pursuit of excellence in Christ. Whatever the case, the author informs them (and us) that we cannot rely upon an inherited endowment.
