“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under herwings, but you were not willing!

– Matthew 23:37

It makes you wonder, could Israel have received their Messiah at His first coming? Christ certainly desired that they would.

Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.

– Matthew 22:29

How often we are mistaken and in error, because we too do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

I’m so grateful that you’ve made the Scriptures a priority in your life this year, by reading (or listening) through the Bible. I am certain that it will produce good fruit in your life.

You’ve made it through the first month! And, we’re almost through the first Gospel.

“And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

– Matthew 21:22

If we truly believe this, then it will affect the frequency and focus of our prayers. And I have discovered that the more I pray—even for little things like parking spaces, and headaches—the more I rejoice in answered prayer.

‘Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’

– Matthew 20:15

It is hard for us to accept that has the right to do as He pleases with His goods. It is especially difficult for us to accept it when we begin to realize that we belong to Him, and He can do with us as he pleases. Diffulct until we realize that He loves us and desires greater things for us than we have ever desired for ourselves.

But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

– Matthew 19:26

This is a simple, but profoundly important reminder. “With God all things are possible.” Believing this fully will transform the way you pray.

“Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

– Matthew 18:4

I love the fact that when Jesus is questioned about greatness in His Kingdom, He doesn’t rebuke those who are inquiring, as if the desire to be great was somehow wrong. Instead, Jesus always directs His disciples, instructing them how to become great.

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

– Matthew 17:5

The final two words of the Father are a good exhortation for us today: “Hear Him!” There are many things that vie for our attention and ultimately distract us from hearing Him. So we need to be disciplined to plan to spend time daily hearing from the Lord, especially through the reading of (or listening to) His word.

When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

– Matthew 16:13

The way one answers this question is essentially important. Some count Jesus as a prophet. Others consider Him a good man, or good moral teacher. But He is far more than that. Ultimately Peter (as inspired by the Father) gave the right answer: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”

– Matthew 15:32

This is the third time we’ve read in Matthew that Jesus had “compassion on the multitude.” It was His great love that moved Him to reach out with grace for those in need. May it be the love of God that compels us to do the same.

And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

– Matthew 14:14

This is the second time in the Gospel of Matthew wherein we read that Jesus, as He beheld the multitudes, “He was moved with compassion.” What moves you? Do you see the broken, lost, and blind of this world? If you do, may the Love of God compel your compassion to reach out with the love and grace of Jesus.
