Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”

– Mark 15:14

No doubt Pontius Pilate had seen guilty criminals stand before him on numerous occasions during his career. But there was something about Jesus that made him publicly declare, “What evil has He done?” He knew full well that Jesus was not worthy of death. He had clearly done nothing wrong. “He knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy” (Mark 15:10). But the crowed, stirred up by the envois religious leaders, cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”

And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.

– Mark 14:24

Jesus was in complete control. He knew exactly what was awaiting Him, and He knew exactly why He was about to suffer. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). No one took His life from Him. He laid it down of His own accord. He had the power to lay it down, and the power to take it up again (John 10:18). Therefore He could say, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.”

And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you.

– Mark 13:5

When interpreting the sayings of Christ concerning the end of all things, it is very important that we recognize that there are a lot of deceptive doctrines surrounding the last things. Eschatology requires careful study, grace and humility when considering these things. Jesus’ words could not be more needed than today: “Take heed that no one deceives you.”

Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?

– Mark 12:24

Mark 12 is filled with interrogations of Jesus by the religious leaders of the day (Pharisees, Scribes, Herodians, Sadducees, etc.). The perfect passover Lamb is being inspected, in preparation for the sacrifice. In each examination Jesus reveals their ignorance, and ultimately their impure motive, too. Those who should have known the Scriptures and the power of God seemed unfamiliar with both. The greatest sign of their willful blindness to the Scripture and power of God would be their wickedness in justifying the condemnation of Christ, though He was innocent

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

– Mark 11:25.

Apart from His grace and empowering, I am an unforgiving and hard man. But by God’s grace, and His enabling Spiritual power, we have the ability in Christ to fulfill this command to forgive.

And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!

– Mark 10:24

Though it is difficult for us—at times—to trust wholly in the Lord (remember the text in Mark 9, yesterday), we so quickly find ourselves trusting in the riches of this world. The tangible (though fleeting) wealth of this world can be a massive barrier keeping us from the Kingdom of God. Beware that you not be ensnared by the folly of trusting in riches.

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!

– Mark 9:24

The words of this fearful father are words that I think many of us could utter on a number of occasions. There are many times were we find our faith challenged by circumstances beyond our level of trust. And yet the Lord is so gracious with us. I believe He does help when our faith is small.

And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

– Mark 8:31-32

I’ve always found this to be comical. “Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.” In Matthew’s account it is recorded that Peter said, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!” How bold and audacious we can sometimes be in our communication with the Lord. We would do well to be reminded that He is our Lord and Master.

He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

– Mark 7:9

How much of a shock must these words have been to the Pharisees and scribes—to whom they were spoken—and to the disciples and general people that must have heard them? The Pharisees and scribes were honored in the Jewish world of the first century. They were committed and ardent followers of the law, and the traditions. But, as can so easily be the case, they had wrongly exalted their traditions to a level God had never intended.

So they went out and preached that people should repent.

– Mark 6:12

The message of John the Baptist (Matthew 3:2) was the same as the message of Jesus (Matthew 4:17), which then became the message of the early disciples. It was the message Petter preached at Pentecost. It was the message that Paul gave upon his conversion in Damascus, in Jerusalem, in Judea, and then among the gentiles, too (Acts 26:20).

Jesus’ commissioning words in Luke still stand today, “Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:46-47).
