But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

– Luke 20:26

I love the way Jesus disrupts the evil plan of the religious leaders, to catch Him. Their wicked motives were obliterated at every turn, to the point that they marveled at His answers and were completely speechless.

Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

– Luke 19:41-42

The deep desire of God was for His people to receive Him as King. But when He came to them, His own received Him not, ultimately saying, “We will not have this man to rule over us.”

And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”

– Luke 18:21

I think if I were conversing with an individual and they made the same statement regarding their keeping of the Law, I might be tempted to rebuke their audacious arrogance. The Bible states clearly, “There is none righteous, no not one.” But Jesus does not rebuke any audacity or arrogance on the part of the rick, young ruler. Instead He zeros in on the primary thing hindering the young man from receiving life in Christ, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

The possessions of the man kept him from faith, and faithfully following Jesus. That was the much bigger problem he faced.

“Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”
And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”

– Luke 17:3-5

I love the response of the disciples to Jesus’ teaching on forgiveness. Forgiveness is not easy for us. We are far more apt to opt for retribution. But God highly values forgiveness. And thank God that He does, or else none of us would be worthy to approach Him. Therefore, if God is so exceedingly gracious and forgiving, we should seek to be so, too.

Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

– Luke 16:14-15

Paul wrote that the love of money “is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Tim. 6:10). Money has a strong allure. It entices many to pursue and be devoted to it (both expressions of ‘love’). We must guard our hearts from being enticed by the seductive charm of money, which seems almost more pronounced in our modern social media saturated environment.

‘It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”

– 15:32

Many of those that have thought on the famous story of the prodigal son have failed to recognize that the story actually has two prodigals. Of course we know the one who squandered his inheritance with riotous (KJV) living. But if we’re not careful we can miss the older brother who responded with anger and jealousy at the grace of his father.

Rejoice in the Father’s grace! Don’t be angry when He is merciful, gracious, and forgiving.

“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

– Luke 14:11

American culture in the twenty-first century is almost entirely opposite of this teaching from Jesus. We are taught in our day to exalt and promote yourself incessantly. But Jesus exemplified and exhorted our humility. Do not be a self-absorbed, self-promotor. Humble yourself  before the Lord and allow Him to exalt and lift you up.

And He said to them, “Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’ “Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.

– Luke 13:32-33

I was recently asked, “Was Jesus ever sarcastic?” I think this is one of the texts that might prove that He was. His (seemingly) sarcastic response is given as some of the Pharisees told Jesus, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.” To this Jesus says, “Well, I’m a bit busy doing the work of casting out demons, and curing the sick today and tomorrow. But I’ll be done with this the day after tomorrow. But I guess since Herod wants to kill me I should just run away the next few days. It cannot be that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.”

Perhaps it wasn’t sarcastic, but it certainly had a bit of irony mixed in for good flavor.

And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

– Luke 12:15

I was stopped dead in my tracks at this verse this week, as it is such a necessary word for our culture, for such a time as this. We are bombarded continually with a message that appeals to the basest instincts of our fallen, covetous nature. “I need more, and more, and more! If I am going to have abundance of life, then I need abundance of possessions.” This is the lie of our cultural moment, and my flesh is so easily tempted to believe it.

“God, help us to beware of covetousness!”

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
