Devotional

And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”

– Luke 18:21

I think if I were conversing with an individual and they made the same statement regarding their keeping of the Law, I might be tempted to rebuke their audacious arrogance. The Bible states clearly, “There is none righteous, no not one.” But Jesus does not rebuke any audacity or arrogance on the part of the rick, young ruler. Instead He zeros in on the primary thing hindering the young man from receiving life in Christ, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

The possessions of the man kept him from faith, and faithfully following Jesus. That was the much bigger problem he faced.
