Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased.

– John 6:2

People follow Jesus for all kinds of different reasons. As John 6 unfolds, it becomes clear that this reason (“because they saw His signs”) was not a sustaining reason for continued following. For we read later in the passage, “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more” (John 6:66).
