“So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

– Acts 20:32

Paul sure knew how to express his final words and exhortations.

We must never lose sight of, and confidence in the power of the Word of God’s grace. His Word and grace are able to establish and build us up as we are sanctified for the day in which we receive the fullness of our inheritance.

And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

– Acts 19:10

Paul was relentless in the work to which God appointed him. Would to God that we too would press forward in the work to which God has called us.

Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in this city.”

– Acts 18:9-10

In many places that Paul ministered he was tempted to be afraid in the face of opposition. We are challenged by such temptations, too. When facing such hostility and resistance we need to recognize that as God works, the enemy will always challenge His work, and the workers. Do not be afraid. Do not keep silent. God is with you and has a work He is intending to do through you.

These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

– Acts 17:11

I can’t stress enough the importance of following the example of the Bereans. It is necessary and essential that we “search the Scriptures daily” as they did.

Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.

– Acts 16:10

I’ve always loved the way that this verse was constructed by Luke. Clearly, at this moment in Paul’s second missionary journey, Luke was a traveling companion and co-laborer with Paul (notice his use of “we”). But also fascinating is the way in which Paul saw a vision, and the team (Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke) concluded that the Lord had called them (“us”) to preach the gospel in Macedonia.

God certainly works in and through individuals, but often God calls a team to work for the furtherance of His Gospel and Kingdom.

For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:

– Acts 15:28

Sometimes the determination of God’s will is as simple as “it seems good to the Holy Spirit, and to us.” When there is unity and agreement among the brethren, often that is the simple indication that is needed.

Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.

– Acts 14:19

More than a decade before this, Paul (then Saul) had presided over the stoning death of Stephen. Now he was on the receiving end. It is truly amazing to consider the transformation that took place in his life to bring him to this point. He had been one of the chief persecutors of the church, and now he was one its chief preachers. And now the persecutor, turned preacher, had become the persecuted.

But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, “Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.”

Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:

– Acts 13:14-16

I can only imagine that the men of the synagogue in Antioch of Pisidia would have been very interested to hear from a Pharisee, a student of Gamaliel, from Jerusalem. And no doubt Paul would love and welcome an invitation such as this.

Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hand to harass some from the church. Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

– Acts 12:1-2

It is interesting to me that James was the first of the Apostles to die in service to the Lord, and John (his brother) was the last of the Apostles to die. Perhaps there is no significance to it, but it is interesting. Additionally it is interesting that something (seemingly) as momentous as the martyrdom of one of the Apostles would be worthy of more than a simple statement in one sentence. But then perhaps we make more of a big deal of death than we should.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not making light of death. But if we believe as we say we believe, then death really is a ‘change of address.’ One second we’re here, and the next we’re in eternity.

Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea.

– Acts 11:29

Many times we are compelled by the needs we see to give. At those times we sometimes feel guilty that we cannot or do not give more. But this verse is a simple reminder that we give “each according to ability.” Give what you can give, and rejoice that you have something to offer.
