But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

– 1 Corinthians 2:14

“The things of the Spirt of God” are “spiritually discerned.” Which means that the Holy Scriptures are only truly understood as we seek God’s guidance and direction by His Spirit. Therefore it is helpful (necessary even) that you and I pray “God, open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law” (Psalm 119:18), every time we approach the Scriptures.

Make sure, before you begin your time reading, studying, memorizing, or meditating upon God’s word, that you pray for God’s discernment, understanding, and wisdom.
