Romans 13
Devotional
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
– Romans 13:1
Today is the first day of July, which means that—at least in the US—we will be celebrating Independence Day, this week. I am grateful that I live in a place, and at a time where religious liberty is a reality. The freedom that I have to gather whenever, and virtually wherever, to worship God, and proclaim the truth of Scripture, is a wonderful blessing. But in light of the freedoms I enjoy, I know that there are many Christians that do not enjoy the same, in other places around the world.
This exhortation from Paul is a true challenge for some. May God be with, and strengthen our brothers and sisters who are subject to governing authorities that stand against the cause of Christ, and threaten persecution upon those who serve and follow Him. We may not always understand how and why God allows and appoints certain leaders in certain places. But we can trust His plans, though we do not understand them.
