“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.”

– Timothy‬ ‭5:17‬

This is as much an exhortation to elders as it is to the church. Those in overseeing positions as elders are to rule and lead well. They should endeavor to lead in such a way that God would be honored, and that they would be worthy of double honor.

Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.

– 1 Timothy 4:15

May it be that our progress in the faith is evident to all, in an abundance of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), and the fruit of love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).

Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

– 1 Timothy 3:7

It is a qualification for leadership within the Church, that we have a good testimony (i.e., reputation) with those who are both inside and outside the church.

If asked apart from your knowledge, what would the people in your life say about your character? Would they say, “He (or she) is kind, self-controlled, humble, joyful, and loving?” Or would they say, “He is kind of a jerk, mostly rude, and irritable?” It is good to have a testimony you share with others—that is, a “I once was lost, but now I’m saved” story—but it is also necessary that there be a good testimony about you, from others.

who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

– 1 Timothy 2:4

No matter your presuppositions, as it relates to God’s sovereignty versus man’s free will, we should move forward in the presumption that God desires the salvation of the people that we interact with on a daily basis (be they our neighbors, co-workers, family members, or friends who are not yet saved). Never assume that the person you know, who does not yet know God, has not been chosen by God for salvation.

But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully,

– 1 Timothy 1:8

Knowing this truth, we should endeavor to be those who use God’s law in a proper manner. Sadly, many believers (and unbelievers alike) do not do so.

But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.

– 2 Thessalonians 3:3

God is our faithful deliverer. This is a truth we need to meditate upon, and rejoice in continually. He builds us up and guards us, and will never fail to do so. What are you concerned about? He will perfect that which concerns you! Trust in the Lord always!

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.

– 2 Thessalonians 2:13-15

As is so often the case, here we are presented with clear teaching on God’s sovereign work in salvation, joined to our responsibility in salvation. God chose you for salvation, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to which He called you, according to belief in the truth. Therefore, stand fast and hold the traditions.

Divine sovereignty and human responsibility are inseparable in the Scriptures.

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other,

– 2 Thessalonians 1:3

Once again I am encouraged (and challenged) by Paul’s commitment to pray for those that were apart of his life. Paul gave thanks in prayer for the growth of faith he witnessed in and among the Thessalonians believers. And I wonder if part of the exceedingly growth of faith wasn’t due (also) to his prayers.

For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

– 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11

Again, when considering prophetic and eschatological passages of Scripture, may it be that we rejoice in, and find comfort from the clear reality that in Christ we are free from wrath.

Therefore comfort one another with these words.

– 1 Thessalonians 4:18

In this passage Paul presents teaching that gives us eschatological insight. Such topics are fascinating, and often solicit much interest. But his final word in chapter four has always stood out to me. Whatever we think we know, or come to believe about the future things God plans to one day accomplish, they ought (ultimately) to be a comfort to us.
