knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

– James 1:3

It is essential that we remember that the trials we face can be used for our continued sanctification and growth, in Christ. It isn’t a given that they will produce patience, but if we accept them as tools through which God can change and transform us, then God can and will use them for His purposes.

Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

– Hebrews 13:17

Those that serve as ministers within the Body of Christ watch out for our souls, and will give an account to God for how they have stewarded the work of shepherding His flock. This being the case, the author of Hebrews exhorts that we submit to their leadership, and seek to make their service for God a joyful one.

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

– Hebrews 12:2

How are we to face the challenges and difficulties of life? One answer is that we need to fix our focus upon the author and finisher of our faith, Jesus Christ. As we look unto Him, we ought to consider how He endured the cross, and all that was associated with it, to rescue us.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

– Hebrews 11:6

We are presented with strong wording when we read that it is impossible to be pleasing to God apart from faith. Faith is essential for salvation, and it is necessary for walking with God. It will be evidenced in my life by my dependence upon the Lord in the circumstances of life. The faithful follower will believe that God is, and trust that He rewards those who faithfully seek Him.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

– Hebrews 10:23

The old 19th century hymn says “My hope is built on nothing less, than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” By His perfect finished work, we have unwavering full assurance and hope that He will be faithful to His promise, until the end. What joy and peace we have in believing!

And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

– Hebrews 9:22

Why did Jesus have to suffer and die on the cross? Because the law required the shedding of blood for the remission and purification of sin. Jesus fulfilled the righteous requirement of the law, to make unrighteous sinners like us, righteous before a holy God.

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

– Hebrews 8:12

Jesus is the fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy, quoted here in Hebrews 8. He is the one who makes mercy available to us. He deals entirely with our sin, and lawless failures. What wonderful grace we’ve been granted in Christ. And what great peace His grace brings to us!

For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

– Hebrews 7:26-27

Jesus is our great High Priest. He is our perfect High Priest. He is completely holy, and entirely separate from sinners, and yet He became like us to offer one sacrifice, once for all, to make us holy and righteous before God. Our peace with God is made possible by our perfect High Priest.

For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

– Hebrews 6:10

God sees, knows, and takes account of how we have and do serve Him. He will not unjustly forget, or overlook the way in which you have followed Him faithfully. And quite clearly, He will reward such service for His name.

But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

– Hebrews 5:14

The desire of every pastor, and I believe the aim of God himself, is that you and I would grow to maturity in our faith. That we, through the training of the Scriptures, might be grown to a point at which we work out our salvation, and walk in obedience (though we may fall, from time to time) to his revealed word.
