Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

– James 3:5

I’ve lived most of my life in Southern California, which means that this time of year we have dozens of wildfires burning throughout the state, and “red-flag” weather warnings virtually every day. Sometimes the smallest spark—from a passing car’s catalytic converter, or waving tree branch contacting power lines—ends up igniting a massive campaign fire that threatens lives and property. In the same way, our tiny tongues have the ability to bring massive destruction. Therefore we would do well to bridle our tongues. Be slow to speak! I guarantee you’ll be happy that you are.
