“Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.”
– 1 Peter 4:4
I was recently speaking with a guy at our church who was walking through the very slander Peter here speaks of. His co-workers, who use to routinely patronize a local adult club together, were surprised when he became a follower of Jesus, but even more surprised when he no longer joined them at the club. In short order their surprise gave way to slander.
There are a host of reasons why will heap abuse on you, when your faith in Jesus changes the way you live. Most often it is out of conviction. The transformation and light in your life exposes the darkness in theirs. Keep it up!
Today’s goal
Live differently. By God’s grace and ability, be a standout in your honesty, integrity and self-control. Be salt and light in a flavorless and dark world.

This is an exhortation that is the 100% antithesis of 21st century American cultural mindset. But it brings to bear upon our hearts the reality that as followers of Jesus, we are “not of this world.” Like “What Would Jesus Do?” back in the 90’s, “Not of this world” was a trendy slogan in the 00’s. I can think of no greater way to do what Jesus would do and also express our other-worldliness than to be clothed with humility.
Today’s goal
Be humble. Or you will (eventually) be humbled.

Is there anyone that does not desire to love life and see good days? If there is, I’ve yet to meet them. The New Living Translation records it, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days.”
Yes! I do.
Thankfully Peter gives us the equation to an enjoyable life with many happy days ahead. Keep your tongue from speaking evil and telling lies. Turn away from evil, do good and seek to bring and maintain peace.
Today’s goal
Enjoy life, have a happy day… Don’t gossip and tell lies. Turn away from evil and seek for opportunities to do good.

We are a chosen generation and royal priesthood. Not because we’ve done anything special or were worthy of being chosen, but because we obtained mercy and grace from God. Therefore, having been graciously chosen, it’s time to grow up!
That’s right! It’s time to grow up and be just what the Lord chose you to be. He didn’t chose me because I was holy, but now that I’m one of His chosen, I ought to (by His strength) endeavor to be holy. And then, as a holy vessel, I can be a light to those that have yet to put their faith in Him.
Today’s goal
Grow Up! Be a light. Obey those that are over you.

“According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” What a beautiful reality. Not only that, we, “by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation.” The guy who, early in his life as a follower of Jesus, put his foot in his mouth a whole bunch, grew to be quite eloquent. That alone gives me hope.
Today’s goal
Rest your hope fully upon the grace of God. Not in your own efforts to be a good person.

How do you treat those around you? James lays into those that are unkind, malicious and miserly. He reminds us that God is aware of our harsh treatment of others.
Today’s goal
Treat others with kindness. Don’t complain.
